The East Asia Summit (EAS) should help strengthen cooperation on maritime security and safety for regional and global benefits, PM Nguyen Tan Dung said.
The plenary session of the 7th East Asia Summit
The Vietnamese Government chief made the point today in Phnom Penh, Cambodia when addressing the 7th EAS.
PM Dung asserted that EAS should continue to serve as a forum for country leaders to talk and define cooperative orientations on strategic issues on politics, security and development areas for the interests of regional countries and within the EAS principles.
He proposed EAS enhance cooperation to counter emerging non-traditional security issues like natural disaster management, anti-terrorism, prevention of trans-national crime as well as human trafficking.
As an important component of the regional structure, EAS should play a positive and supplement role in favor of common goals such as peace, security, stability and development in the region, he added.
PM Dung suggested EAS focus on maritime security, firstly search and resure of fishermen and vessels affected by natural disasters, incidents and piracy; environmental protection and marine ecodiversity and sustainable preservation of aquatic resources.
The Vietnamese Government chief hailed the common efforts in favor of peace, stability, security and marine navigation safety.
He asked for other countries’ support for ASEAN and China to fully fulfill the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), the Joint Statement on the 10 anniversary of DOC towards the early creation of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC); and the ASEAN’s Six-Point Principles on the East Sea to resolve disputes with peaceful solutions on the basis of international laws and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea./.
